Psalm 76 and the LORD’s Majesty

The GOD of Israel has been able to allow Israel to survive the many struggles. While there are many difficulties that Israel had experienced, the LORD was able to protect Israel through all the experiences. King David shows this through Psalm 76 when he mentions the might and power of the LORD. While there were nations that contended with Israel, they were all routed and defeated. While Israel was held captive momentarily under some empires, the LORD was able to deliver them from captivity again and again. While other nations had stronger armies and larger armies, Israel has been able to survive through the guidance and help of the LORD.

The LORD was able to guide them away from Egypt and allowed Israel to go to the promised land. When arriving at the promised land, the LORD told Joshua not to fear as they would take possession of the land in the territory. Israel was able to defeat the Canaanites, Moabites, Amalekites, and the surrounding nations that would threaten their ability to stay in the promised land. Israel was well aware of the majesty and strength of the LORD who made sure that not only Israel knew of the power of the One True LORD, but also the surrounding nations.

“In Judah GOD is known; his name is great in Israel. His abode has been established in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. There he broke the flashing arrows, the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah” – Psalm 76:1-3

While it appeared that there were stronger armies and nations with resources, the LORD was able to humble those nations through His greatness. Israel was able to possess the promised land and be able to thrive. King David acknowledges the importance that the LORD has had in winning the battles against the enemies of Israel. While many trust in chariots and horses, David knew that his trust was in the LORD, the Almighty.

“At your rebuke, O GOD of Jacob, both rider and horse lay stunned. But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused? From the heavens you uttered judgment; the earth feared and was still, when GOD arose to establish judgment, to save all the humble of the earth. Selah” – Psalm 76: 6-9
