In 1 Corinthians, Paul is attempting to describe how to build up the church and instructs believers in how to help each other edify the church. He has seen different difficulties that have existed in different churches and is attempting to instruct in a way that will produce fruits in the spirit. He makes sure to instruct the church to keep loving one another and to desire the spiritual gifts. These gifts are only available through the Holy Spirit that allows us to prophesy in the name of Jesus.

It is written that the spirit of prophesy will allow individuals to confess that Jesus is the Christ and who has triumphed on the cross and was resurrected on the third day. Therefore, we are to build each other up and help each other be able to understand the importance of the Holy Spirit and the ability to desire the spiritual gifts that are given. This fulfils our ability to reach out and help others understand the message of the gospel.

These spiritual gifts allow us to help one another and build up one another since we are ultimately building up the church. Instead of focusing on controversies or on distractions, Paul states that whatever is done should be done to build up the church.
