Man Does Not Live By Bread Alone
“And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” – Deuteronomy 8:3

Sometimes life throws us into circumstances where we are going through the desert and don’t know when the destination will arrive. Sometimes it feels like we are ready to get there and have so much energy and positivity and other times it feels like it may seem bleak. However, we are reminded that we place our hope in the LORD and not in our own understanding.
In the biblical account of Deuteronomy, we see that there was a specific humbling occurring. There is a humbling that comes through when we can no longer trust in ourselves to get everything we need and instead have to shift and focus on a spiritual point of view that allows us to have faith. It is only when we are humbled that we may see things from a different perspective. However, the humbling is not intended to humiliate or to cause pain but to allow us to open our faith to the manna that the LORD provides. The spiritual food that is also needed for our daily living. We need our daily bread but we do not live only by food but by the word of the LORD. Likewise, in order to live we must have faith in the LORD and trust that his manna will be present when we need it.
Faith can be an abstract belief or idea that may seem counterintuitive to our fleshly and worldly understanding. Why have faith when there are comforts and security and provisions that don’t require this abstract concept? Why go through testing and difficulties and humbling when there are pleasures in this world? Why choose to humble yourself when you can be aggrandized? And the answer is because it is the way toD the LORD. It is the way to His promises. It is the way to His love. It is the way to His provisions. It is the way to His protection. It is the way to His eternal life. It is the way to His promises.
