“Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to the LORD, the GOD of Israel, they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of the fathers’ houses and said to them, ‘ Let us build with you, for we worship your GOD as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria who brought us here. But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ houses in Israel said to them, ‘You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our GOD; but we alone will build to the LORD, the GOD of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.’” – Ezra 4: 1-3

Ezra 4: 1-3 Bible Verse Commentary

We see from the previous chapter in Ezra that the people of Israel were filled with joy at the beginning of the creation of the foundation of the new temple. They were given a renewed hope knowing that GOD was in control of their fate. In Chapter 4 of Ezra, we see that there arises opposition against the plan to build the temple. We see that there were adversaries of Judah and Benjamin, the two tribes of the Southern Kingdom of Israel. We understand that this opposition may have been from those who saw the temple and the city as a return of Israel to former glory and splendor. We see that these adversaries feel a certain disdain for the former glory of Israel.

The first thing these individuals do is to plot against the returned exiles’ plan to build the temple that was given by the King Cyrus at the time. We see that the adversaries do not pay attention to the will of GOD or the King or the exiles and begin to plot against the construction. First they attempt to act as if they are a part of the movement to build the temple. They attempt to “act” the part and even lie concerning their worship. The elders or individuals which had the leadership position notice their intent either by the will of GOD or their holiness for GOD and understand what they attempt to do. They firmly deny their help because they had nothing to do with building the house of GOD. We see the resistance against the will of GOD by those that oppose GOD.

This example relates forward to the time of the New Testament when the Gospel is being preached and is resisted by this same enmity. We see that GOD has a specific will for His people and that there is opposition to the will of GOD; however, this does not mean that the opposition triumphs. We see that the men of Israel defend their cause and continue to build the temple without the help of their adversaries. Defeated after attempting to fake interest in the project, they quickly began to scheme using other tactics such as discouraging, intimidating, and bribing. We see these tactics as ways that the enemies of GOD attempt to discredit, confuse, and intimidate the believers who are of GOD, but they continue to attempt to build seen in the Book of Ezra.

We can then shift our perspective from the ways of the world to the ways of GOD. We are able to understand that while there is sin that prevails and causes certain unnecessary actions to occur, we also know that GOD is present through it all. We can see that this could be a test allowing for GOD to use His enemies to test the will of His people. How strong is the desire of GOD’s people for the will of GOD? We see the exiles continue to attempt to build even through the opposition that they encounter. We are able to see that GOD is eternal, Almighty, everywhere, and infinite among the many qualities of GOD which are indescribable as well. We know that GOD is in control and while it may appear that the opposition may have a momentary lead, GOD is the ultimate victor as we see in the Book of Ezra.

While this may appear to be a sad chapter, it illustrates the tactics that the enemies of GOD use against the people of GOD. We are able see first hand that while there may be wordly opposition to GOD’s will, GOD’s will prevails. We begin to see in Chapter 5 of Ezra, that building renews again even after the attempts of the adversaries of the exiles to stop the construction. We see the grace of GOD and the will of GOD both allowing for the construction through the exiles of Judah and Benjamin and that the will of GOD is what controls history.
