“Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the GOD of Israel who was over them. Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of GOD that is in Jerusalem, and the prophets of GOD were with them, supporting them.” – Ezra 5: 1-2

After what happened in Ezra Chapter 4 we begin to see how the men of GOD from the prophets to the builders began to rebuild the temple regardless of the opposition that had occurred. We see that the previous work of the adversaries had been decreased and the prophets of GOD began to preach and prophesy for the need of construction. We see that the prophets take initiative and begin to instruct the people of Judah and Jerusalem to begin building through the will of GOD. We see that the prophets take the leadership role knowing that their word is important as the word of GOD motivates them to accomplish the will of GOD. We see two specific individuals Haggai and Zechariah working together to accomplish the will of GOD.

While this may seem strange due to the previous edict that they should not construct we see that GOD must have communicated with His people telling them through the prophets that it was now necessary to begin building. We see that the will of GOD takes priority and the people begin rebuilding through Zerubbabel and Jeshua while they were being supported and helped by the prophets. We see the importance of community in working together towards the will of GOD and making sure that everyone in their kingdom role has a specific designation as seen here. We see the prophets working together with the people who work together with the builders making sure that everyone is supported.

The opposition that had caused the construction to stop now is defeated through the will of GOD that is being worked through the people of GOD, His prophets, His builders, and the way that everyone is working together to accomplish the work of GOD. We see that through the previous order to stop construction, the prophets and people of Judah and Jerusalem did not stop praying and petitioning GOD for His will. We see that the previous adversaries will again attempt to cause division and cause the work to cease but this time this does not occur. We are able to see the advancement of the work that had been planned under King Cyrus to continue through the new King Darius.

While there was a pause in the construction of the work, we see that GOD is able to work His will through history. The temple would be constructed and the people who had been instructed by GOD to complete it were the ones who continued working on it despite the opposition. We can see that GOD decides the perfect timing for the construction and allows for the best solution for His people. While there may have been a feeling of being forsaken after the temple was not built right away, GOD used the time to allow for an even greater blessing for His people when we hear of how the temple was to be blessed with multiple necessities. We see through this that GOD works all things for our good and for His kingdom.

We see New Testament promises through the building the second temple. We see that GOD wants to establish the ability to have a relationship and communication with His will and His love for us. We see this when Jesus Christ was sent to save us for our sins and described to us that each of us has a temple where the Holy Spirit can reside. We are reminded that we are given the opportunity to accept GOD the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit to allow us the ability to be free from sin and strengthen our faith. We are reminded of the opposition that exists, but that GOD is able to work through the opposition in our lives and teach us that we are capable of accomplishing GOD’s will for His kingdom and for our good.
