“O my GOD, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my GOD, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens.”- Ezra 9: 6

In Chapter 9 of Ezra, we are able to see the humility of Ezra not only of himself but the humility he expresses on behalf of his people. We see that there had been times where they did not have the capacity to live in their homeland, but still describe the protection and love that GOD feels for His people through the captivity that they formerly experience. Through the rebuilding process, GOD tells Ezra that there is something that needs to change. He is told of the need to change a specific action that the people of Israel were doing. Ezra responds by asking for forgiveness and describes how GOD has been with His people through everything from the time of guilt to the time of prosperity.

We see that Ezra is able to humble himself before the LORD in order to not only describe that he did not know what was happening, but making sure that what GOD wants is accomplished. The specific action that was wanted to be changed was that some people within the community were marrying foreign women. While in today’s culture this does not seem bad, we have to remember the context of history that occurred in 523 B.C. We cannot apply our lens of understanding from the modern world view and must be able to understand the reasoning for this.

From the previous stories, we see that Israel had been able to enter the territory promised by GOD and be able to not only survive but thrive in a contentious territory. We see that there were enemies around Israel and yet GOD delivered them from many difficulties. Seen in other stories within the Bible, there are stories of specific ways that the enemies of the people attempted to fight against them and devised specific manners. GOD instructs the people of Israel to not marry with other nations because it would cause them to change their ways and change their beliefs from the beliefs of GOD. We are able to see that Ezra can see the reasons behind the need to change and asks for GOD’s forgiveness while explaining how GOD is able to protect and provide for them even when it appears difficult.

This issue appears to have changed because believers can be found in all countries and nations. From the point of view of today’s world, this does not affect as much as it did in the past. There are people of faith in every country and this has led to changes concerning what it means to intermarry. We see Ezra asking for forgiveness while making sure that what GOD states is accomplished. Israel is allowed to continue moving towards a new future that is filled with the promises of GOD, and Ezra wants to make sure that the promises are completed by following the will of GOD.

Once again we see that GOD wants us to honor the commandments. We see that we are to follow the first commandment. The reason for the point discussed was in order to prevent people being led away from the faith in GOD. Similar to the New Testament, we see that GOD intends to unite us under the faith and belief of His steadfast love, guidance, and path. We are instructed to change and make sure to believe in the guidance of GOD and His redirection as is discussed in the passage. We see GOD directs and redirects us according to His will in order to keep us safe from adversity.
