“While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping, and casting himself down before the house of GOD, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel, for the people wept bitterly.” – Ezra 10: 1

We seen in Chapter 10 of Ezra that the people understand that what they had committed was wrong and began to repent of their actions. We see that the people understand what Ezra tells them and want to make right their actions. We see the people assemble together in order to see what can be done to remedy the situation that had been created. The people respond to Ezra’s confession with their own confession. We see that Ezra’s reaction is able to affect the people and allow them to acknowledge their actions in a similar manner in which Ezra acknowledges sin.

The interesting part of Ezra’s reaction as well as the people’s reaction is that they are the same reaction. Compared to previous reactions when an individual would confess the sin of themselves or of the people, the people would scoff and even insult the individual who wanted there to be a change of sin. We see this in chapters in the Bible where a prophet or individual addresses the need to change from sin and the people either ignoring or scoffing at the reaction. With Ezra, we see that the people respond with the same response of Ezra working together to resolve the situation.

This difference in reaction may indicate that the people have a stronger connection with their faith and belief and are able to listen and change. They are able to be receptive to the request from Ezra and they also make sure to humble themselves like Ezra had been doing. We see that there are many different responses that we could have expected from the people, but they quickly make sure that the request is completed quickly. We see how GOD is able not only to heal the land, the great city, the temple, but most importantly the hearts and minds of His people. We are able to understand that GOD wants us to turn to His will and understand with our faith. While some of the people may have had a strong attachment to what they had, they had to understand that there was a reason behind the request. The people trust GOD and make sure to follow Ezra by changing their actions.
