“In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest: ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.’ Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, ‘It is a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?” – Haggai 1: 1-4

Haggai 1: 1-4 Bible Verse Audio

“Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, ‘I am with you, declares the LORD.’ And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadal, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their GOD, on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.” – Haggai 1: 13-15

After understanding the book of Ezra, we are able to see that there was divine inspiration and instruction by GOD for Ezra, the prophets, the remnant of the exiles, and even for the king. We see that there is a belief in the need of working the will of GOD and even when there was opposition for building through the works of the adversaries, the people began to do what was instructed. In the book of Haggai, we are able to see the similarities that exist in the book of Ezra concerning how the individuals learn of the need to start even when the adversaries attempt to block the project.

We see that Haggai receives word from GOD telling Haggai to go and tell the people that it was time to start. We see a different perspective because previously we did not know what was directly heard by the prophets in the book of Ezra. We only were able to know that the prophets were working with the people in order for them to know that GOD wanted for the temple and city to be built. Now we are able to see the words that motivated the people to go against the orders of the adversaries and begin construction. The houses of the people were well built while the house of worship was not built up. This showed that there was a need for the people to shift perspective from the material living that had been noted at that point to a spiritual existence in accordance with the belief and faith.

We see that GOD is able to stir up our spirit so that we can accomplish His work and will. We see that it was not only Ezra and Haggai and Zechariah, but also Zerubbabel who was the governor of Judah, Joshua, the high priest, and those that were remnant of the people from the exile. They were all stirred to do what they needed to do in order to build up. This building up is not only materially but also spiritually as GOD was building each individual up for the building of the physical construction. We see that even the Darius the king, in the book of Ezra, commanded that the house be built. We see how GOD is able to work all things for His good and our good.

We see in the book of Ezra the documentation of the construction. We learn about the time it took for construction to begin, the adversity they faced, the ability to construct and continue. In the book of Haggai, we get the prophets interpretation of what is happening. We see that there is a spiritual stirring that allows individuals to act in the will of GOD. In the book of Ezra, we know that GOD was able to use his believers and non-believers to accomplish His will and in the book of Haggai we get to see what the prophet tells the people and how GOD motivates and helps the people to accomplish His will.

With both books in perspective, we are able to continue seeing the manner in which GOD allows us to understand that His path gives us not only the ability to accomplish His will but our good. We see that there is a return from exile. When the people returned, they did not expect to have a big project on their hands. GOD gives them a big project and reminds them of not only GOD’s glory but of their own good.
