The Letter to the Hebrews
“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, GOD spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of GOD and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” -Hebrews 1: 1-4
We are able to see in the letter to the Hebrews the ability to understand the importance of Jesus Christ in our lives as believers and also for those that are non-believers. In the first chapter of the letter, we known that GOD sent the prophets to speak to the people in order for them to learn the commandments in the example of Moses, to keep the commandments and renounce idolatry in the examples of Jeremiah and Ezekiel, and the need to hear the word of GOD and accept GOD and Jesus Christ in the example of John the Baptist. We know that GOD sent prophets to teach the people in order so that they could worship GOD and not sin. We learn in the first chapter of the letter that GOD after sending the prophets also sent Jesus Christ in order to save and redeem humanity from their sins.
In the letter, we learn that GOD wants us to understand the importance of believing in Jesus Christ as the perfector and deliverer who has given us eternal salvation by dying on the cross and being resurrected by GOD. We know that in Genesis the world was created through the word of GOD. GOD is the Creator who allows us to see the world through steadfast love and wisdom which are also given by GOD. We learn that the universe is held by the word of his power.
Similar to Genesis understanding we are told that GOD is able to create and destroy as He will destroy old earth and old heaven and create new earth and new heaven. All of this happens through GOD’s creation and sovereignty. Jesus Christ is now seated at the right hand of GOD and also has been given all power, authority, dominion, and subjection. We know this because the prophets prophesied about Jesus Christ including Moses, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and many others. We know this because the apostles and disciples prophesied about the events that took place when they followed Jesus from Mark, Luke, and John. We also know this from the later disciples like Paul and Stephen who preached about the word of GOD even when they were not present as the initial disciples. We are able to see and hear and read that Jesus Christ came to save sinners, preach the word of GOD, and allow individuals reconciliation with GOD. As to the author of the letter to the Hebrews is unknown, we know that his letter was sent to Jewish believers, although for anyone who believes in GOD and Jesus Christ also.
